So I, for some reason, thought they were a girl group. I don't know why I thought this. I'm obviously mistaken. But that's okay! They're very obviously not a girl group, and they're obviously active, so the next time I run across their name or them, I'll remember. WEi is part of the slightly unfortunate batch of COVID debuts though, and I feel bad for them, but given that they've managed to survive this long, which is not something every 2021 group can boast, I hope they have continued and expanding success.
The song does a really good job of keeping to a mellow stroll through most of it. The chorus has a little bit more of a burst of energy, which immensely helps snap the song out of the lulling rut it could have fond itself in. It's a very stable rhythm for the energy, which is itself a little lulling. This is of course only true up until that electric guitar slams out of the stables and lightning flashes through the sky behind its silhouette. And then the guitar goes back into the stable and I'm somehow left more bereft with the return to the softness than if the song had simply maintained it through the song. However, there's also a very interesting instrument that I'm not entirely sure about its identity hidden just before the electric guitar scream, which I appreciate.
I actually really like their voices and think that they suit this style very well. I'm reminded of some of the angstier Backstreet Boys songs, but the total, moody angst that there could be does come through most strongly during the chorus without there being any hint of it during the verses. There's evidence that they can do some great harmonies because of the choruses, and it would have been really cool to hear more harmonizing within the song, or otherwise create some vocal layers to increase the complexity of the song and make it stand out. The eldest member of the group did contribute to both lyrics and the composition, but there are enough people involved in the composition that my disappointment is spread out.
However. This song is also getting a lot of attention and with the group not having a first win yet, I don't know that I'd be all that surprised if this managed to get that all important First Win for the group. Just because this one doesn't scratch the itch for me doesn't mean I don't want them to get a win with it.
They really are quite a good-looking group, aren't they? The general malaise and emotional mill stone are well-suited to the style, if not the execution, of the song. But the shift from alone and miserable to together and fireworks is a good indication of the message of the music video, which seems to be togetherness. There's been a strong trend of that in the songs the last three months or so, and it's only getting stronger, which is a story that I'm fully about. And I really like the choreography for the song as well. Its very fitting with a high enough level of difficulty that they likely won't get hit with an accusation of inability to dance, but not so difficult that most of them will be able to sing and dance at the same time.
