I'm going to do my level best to be normal about the review, especially when it comes to the music video. This is my dude, you know? Funny story. So I have pickets of Scoups and Joshua hanging up on my 95z section of my closet office. Joshua's is a little temperamental and likes to fall and be dramatic. SCoups's doesn't. Like, ever. A couple of weeks ago, I wore the Yunho jersey I have from the In Your Fantasy tour to work because I needed the emotional comfort because of the pair of Seventeen enlistments. I walked in, Joshua's had somehow fallen and rolled from behind my desk so he was staring at me when I came in. SCoups's had fallen as well. And I recognize they're inanimate objects and thus do not have any of the jealousy or accusation that they (especially SCoups) would be exhibiting, but the amount of guilt that slammed into me for wearing another man's name was stupid. Of all the days for both to have fallen. Also, I'm fully expecting the hip-hop unit to drop a song called "Air" at some point in the near future, since it's the hip-hop unit with Fire and Water, and now it's (technically) a hip-hop subunit that is debuting with the song Earth on the mini album (thank you for the length on that one, by the way, otherwise I'd be deeply disappointed by the runtime rather than just disappointed).
Wow, that sample is incredible subtle in places. It runs through nearly the entire song, but there are some sections where it is turned down quite a lot so that it only lightly flavors the song rather than being one of the strongest notes. It's a very solid song that doesn't weave and wander too much throughout, not that it has the runtime to really wander too much. There's also not a lot really going on in the song for the instrumental other than to be support for the vocals and rapping, but I really do have to commend whoever's decision it was in making the sample so subtle. That was a fantastic decision, not one I was expecting, and now I want to go watch the movie.
I was expecting a lot less English for this subunit, because while Mingyu has been working really hard with the English lately, and it's been obvious with the progress he's been making, Scoups hasn't let us know how much English he's been learning. Historically, he hasn't been one of the major English speakers in the group, even if we don't include the native speakers in that list. The only Korean that's actually spoken is from Lay Bankz, our lovely featured artist who is not Korean, and that just makes that better. I love that. We get some singing from them, not as much as I'd like because those two have gorgeous singing voices, but enough that we get a little bit of a blend (Earth is where we get the majority of those gorgeous vocals, so I'm good. I got what I want from them). Also, in terms of the repetition, here's the thing. Yes, "pretty woman" gets repeated a lot, but the rhythm also isn't that steady and it cuts itself off short, so the repetition doesn't bother me quite as much as it normally would.
I have steeled myself for this. The choreography is exactly what I'd expect from two of Seventeen's resident dorks. Shoe choices are...interesting. The height difference reminds me of Hoshi and Woozi, which is really funny considering SCoups is not short. I miss them. Sorry. But as enjoyable as the music video is, and it is delightful, the best part is that it feels like a movie from the 90s because of the outtakes and such at the very end during the credits. I don't remember if Pretty Woman (the movie) has them because it's been a hot minute since I watched it, but I do know that 10 Things I Hate About You does because those are really funny.
