Congrats on the win!! I don't actually know anything about this group so I am going to have to double check on certain dates, so I know how to proceed. And, okay, project group from a survival show that debuted last March. So they're one year down out of their two year contracts. Project groups can be a mixed bag with ages, so this is where things might be unfortunate or delightful. Eldest is a member of cignature, which is really cool because I like listening to that group. And the maknae is... Okay, two months after I turned thirteen, I was in seventh grade. Seventh grade. I'm currently so outraged that I almost don't want to write this. So yes, even though we have a leader who is at a happy age, the rest of them were all underage, and the maknae was at a nauseating age to debut. Debuted at thirteen. I don't care that she's fourteen now; older idols like Taemin have said that if they could go back, they'd wait to debut, and somehow Taemin and Max were older than she was. I'm legit going to have to take a minute here. Needless to say, we are on Underage Protocol, which is one listen for instrumentals, one for vocals, and then up to two for the music video. And if I like it, I won't be able to listen to it until 2029, so it would simply sit in the playlist gathering dust.
I kind of hate that I love it. The song genre seems to be rock with some latin underpinnings, which is rather refreshing to hear right now. The funny thing is that I could easily see this with an anime opening. It's got good variations between the different sections, with the xylophone in particular a nice touch and addition that I wasn't expecting. It also could have been a glockenspiel. The song has enough sections where it lets the very young members breathe that also do a good job of resetting the song a little bit each time, so it's very well put together, unfortunately. I'd probably add the song to a bunch of playlists if the maknae hadn't been thirteen at debut.
Album cover art is cool too. They sound young, and I'm pretty sure I can pick out the older member. There's literally ten years between leader and maknae. If they had a little more maturity in their voices, it would so perfectly fit this song. As it is, they still sound so good. Look, I get why they were voted for by the fans. They've got incredible voices. I could continue to harp about how they have no business debuting in an adult kpop group when they're this young, but I don't think anyone wants to hear it. I will repeat what I said about a different group with a fourteen-year-old at debut, which was "If she's this good now, think about how unparalleled she'd be with five more years of training under her belt. She could be this generation's Chan." It really is a shame because I really like this song. It's cute without being suck-on-a-sugar-cube-soaked-in-honey sweet.
That's a cute little music video. It really is. And we have a storyline, so I am happy as a clam. Is it awe inspiring and thought-provoking? Not particularly. It's basically a Hallmark movie of a music video, albeit Teen Hallmark and I don't know if that's a thing, about having courage in admitting your feelings.
